Ten (10) UK cities have received £114 million (US $185 million) to roll out super-fast (Ultra- Fast) broadband services.
The money will be used by each of these cities to build city-wide networks, where broadband of 80-100Mbps, will be offered to an extra 230,000 residential and 50,000 business customers.
The following cities won the bid for this money, due to the fact that they had submitted comprehensive digital plans to the UK government:
- London - £25m
- Leeds and Bradford - £14.4m
- Belfast - £13.7m
- Manchester - £12m
- Bristol - £11.3m
- Cardiff - £11m
- Edinburgh - £10.7m
- Birmingham - £10m
- Newcastle - £6m
Plans that would further attract business and investment to the UK.
There will be a second super-connected city fund which will see a further £50 million (US $81 million) shared between ten (10) smaller cities in the coming months.
These Ultra- Fast networks are scheduled for implementation by 2015.
The UK government has offered the above money in an effort to position it as the fastest country worldwide, by 2015.
